The subject falls between

Just because we can do something doesn't mean we should.

If something is worth doing it's worth doing right.

There is an opportunity here no one is talking about.

The technology was developed for a specific, limited use case. While scalable, it was never developed to replace in person meetings.

We humans are social creatures. We require in person interaction. The negative effects of the smart phone are now well documented. Even in person we are in a bubble with our phone.

There are several things online meeting platforms do that cause stress, anxiety, and less participation not more.

1) you are being looked at by every at the same time. You are not part of the group, you are on display.

2) the speaker is often not visually identifiable. Your brain sees everyone looking at you as the speaker. This causes overload and fatigue.

What COVID-19 and all it's cousins did was force the tech work place to evolve rapidly rather than at the slow pace it was going. To be sure by 2030 we would probably be here. In moving too quickly we have accepted faster horses rather than truly transformational technology who's benefits out way the negatives.
